And the Fantabulous Decimation of the UConn Huskies

Monday night the South Carolina Gamecocks went into Storrs, Connecticut and hammered the UConn Huskies 70-52 holding them to just one basket in the first quarter.  It was the first ever victory for South Carolina over the Huskies, losing the previous eight matchups.

For Uconn, it was a story similar to their other losses this season, they’re 1-3 when they allow opponents to shoot 44% or better.  Only Seton Hall shot the ball well against the Huskies but still lost.  UConn shot better than 50% themselves that day.  Offensively against South Carolina, they shot below 40% for just the fifth time all year, all three losses are in that group.

For the Gamecocks, they are now 9-1 against top 25 teams. The one loss was against Indiana, who is the only team all season to shoot 50% against South Carolina. Mississippi State came close to that mark, 49.3%, and were the closest win for South Carolina all season, just two points. The way they have dominated really good teams, it’s hard to see them not earning the #1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, barring any late season setbacks.

It’s shaping up to be another non-UConn national championship season. Teams should take advantage of this opportunity with #1 overall recruit Paige Bueckers slated to join the Huskies next fall. And if you haven’t heard of her, this ESPN piece is worth a read.
