This page gives you definitions of some of the advanced stats you see out there. The NBA leader is intended to give you a perspective as to what a ‘good’ number looks like. Obviously, these numbers are over the course of at least 70 games and a single game number could fluctuate quite a bit.
A few things to note about these stats in general:
- You can have true shooting percentages and effective field goal percentages OVER 100%. If you make a number of three-pointers at a high percentage then in both cases your point total would outweigh your shots taken and put you over 100%
TS% = True Shooting Percentage
This gives you a measure of the points you’re scoring vs the number of shots taken from both the field and free throw line. The free throw line is slightly downgraded because it is a higher percentage but uncontested shot.
2019-20 NBA Leader (min 65 games): Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz 69.9%
eFG% = Effective Field Goal Percentage
Three points shots are worth one point more but are generally a lower percentage shot. This gives the three point shot the appropriate weight in order to show how effective you are with the shot you take. If you take and make a number of threes, you’re certainly more effective with your shooting than you would be making the same number of twos.
